Each of the homeless was once a son or daughter, brother or sister, nephew or niece, or grandchild. Now they are alone...

If the problem is just a lack of shelters, why aren't all of the homeless shelters always full? Will more shelters solve the problem?

We can debate the issue, but many people on the street STAY on the street because an empty room is very lonely. Homelessness is very much about a lack of connectedness. A need to belong somewhere.

Many homeless people are elderly. Men and women who have lost their spouses. And their children who live at a distance, or don't communicate with them. The feeling: lonely and abandoned.

And what about the displaced families? Parents who have lost their jobs, and can't afford to maintain their residence and lifestyle. And their children. We all know it's happening more and more.

And what about sick people who have no health insurance? And can't be self-reliant? Or those who are psychologically needy, and need personal contact.

Yes, there are some government programs (less and less of them) that can offer some aid. But it's more than just money...if someone's lucky enough to get some financial assistance.

People are spending more dollars on weight-loss products, cosmetic surgery and sexual enhancement drugs than they are on people who are truly in need. People who are so alone, with no one to turn to.
